I am a native Kentuckian, born and raised in Covington. I am a product of Catholic education, having attended St. Aloysius School in Covington and Notre Dame Academy in Park Hills, Ky. I graduated from Western Kentucky University with a B.S. in Education. I then completed the Fifth Year Program. I have taught middle school math at St. Joe since 1990 and am the sixth grade homeroom teacher. My job at St. Joe is, not only to prepare middle school students for high school math, but also to help them get comfortable with math - to relieve that famous "math anxiety."

WELCOME TO MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH!  I try to greet each child as he or she enters my classroom. We get settled and immediately start talking about and doing math! It is my job to be ready for your children - to teach, to answer questions, to give support, and open their worlds to the wonders of the world of math. These are my responsibilities. Students have a responsibility to come to class prepared and ready to focus. (yes - even middle school students)!  Please help your children to be ready for class.  They need sharpened pencils and notebooks each day. (Eighth graders need a binder with dividers and looseleaf paper.)

GRADES:  HOW DOES YOUR CHILD EARN POINTS FOR HIS/HER MATH GRADE?

TESTS:  Tests can be 50 - 100 points. Tests are Mid-chapter and Chapter Tests. Testing dates are always announced in advance and dates also posted on Snap Grades.

QUIZZES 10 - 30 points.  These quizzes are given on day to day material. They are usually announced the day before the quiz.  These are not always announced on Snap Grades.

SAXON TESTS (6th & 7th Grades) An average is taken of all Saxon tests taken during each quarter.  This one grade is then averaged with the quarterly grades.

HOMEWORK (6th & 7th Grades) Assignments that are complete (all work shown) and on time will receive a homework stamp.  Students must keep all stamped assignments until the end of the quarter. They are then collected and given a grade according to the number handed in.  If all assignments are handed in, a grade of 100% is given.

 GOALS FOR SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS

Students will:

-  Master operations using whole numbers (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).

-  Classify numbers as prime or composite;use divisibility rules to identify GCF and LCM of numbers

-  Learn rules for all operations using fractions and decimals.

-  Develop an understanding of the relationship between fractions and decimals.

-  Develop skills in measurement using metric and customary units.

-  Use simple formulas to find perimeters and areas of plane figures, volumes of prisms and cylinders.

-  Explore elements of plane geometry.

-  Solve real world problems using learned skills.

-  Collect and organize data through graphs and charts.

-  Read, interpret, and make predictions from given graphs and charts.

Texts used:  Prentice Hall Mathematics, Course 1 (whole class instruction)

Saxon 76 (students work independently from this text)

GOALS FOR SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS

Students will:

-  Continue to practice all operations with fractions and decimals.

-  Use rules for all operations with integers.

-  Solve and graph linear equations.-

-  Correctly use ratios and solve problems using proportions.

-  Recognize the relationship of fractions, decimals, and percents; solve problems with percents.

-  Solve real life problems dealing with consumer math.

-  Discover the use of probability in the real world.  Use basic rules of probability.

-  Enlarge the study of plane geometry.

-  Continue the study of area, perimeter of plane figures and volume of space figures.

Texts used:  Prentice Hall Mathematics, Course 2 (whole class instruction)

Saxon 76 (This text is continued as independent study from sixth grade)

GOALS FOR EIGHTH GRADE PRE-ALGEBRA STUDENTS

This is the last year we have to ready your child for high school math.  We spend this year working with problems dealing with percentages, proportions, geometry, graphing, statistics, and the use of data in our world.  Students will also use the rules for solving linear equations and inequalities using whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, and integers.  The emphasis of the year's study is readiness for algebra.

Texts used:  Saxon Algebra 1/2

                 Prentice Hall Mathematics, Course 3

GOALS FOR EIGHTH GRADE ALGEBRA STUDENTS

-  Add like terms

-  Use rules for problems with positive and negative exponents.

-  Write algebraic phrases and equations

-  Recognize and use properties of real numbers.

-  Find GCF and find LCM of polynomials.

-  Solve rational equations.

-  Solve and graph inequalities.
