   Course Description and expectations:

In English, students will continue learning and using the 6-trait writing methods and will be introduced to a variety of writing genres. Rubrics and checklists will be used to help them learn how to improve their own writing. Some of the written assignments will be evaluated more than once...this is to allow students the opportunity to grow their writing skills. The curriculum will also emphasize the mechanics of writing (spelling, grammar and punctuation) as well as the use of figurative language.

The majority of pre-writing and editing are done at school, but some of the final copying/typing needs to be done at home. If there is ever a need to print at school (broken printer or lack of ink does happen sometimes), please send a copy on a “zip drive” or as an attachment in an e-mail and we can print it here at school. Students are also allowed access to the computer lab every morning from 7:00-7:40 am for typing and/or printing.

In Literature, students will use their textbooks as well as some novels to explore and understand the elements of literature. I encourage all students to spend at least 30 minutes each evening reading either an assigned reading (when given) or a book of their choice.

Grades are based on tests, quizzes, and homework along with several writing projects. In addition to completing work on time, students are expected to come to class prepared…that includes bringing textbooks, notebooks, folders and pens daily.

 Goals and Policies

  • My goal is to offer your students a positive and rich learning environment and allow them the opportunity to stretch their reading and writing abilities and reach their greatest potential.

  • Students are expected to respect each other and to follow the classroom rules at all times.

  • Students should come to class each day with all materials and ready to learn.

  • Students must always use pens. Assignments written in pencil will have to be re-written!

Beyond the Classroom

I began school in Virginia at James Madison University where I met my husband of 27 years. We have three children: Shannon, 25; Emily, 23; and John, 17. After staying home for many years, I completed my degree at WKU and began teaching here at St. Joseph School in 2003.

In addition to teaching English and Literature each year, I enjoy organizing the yearbook, coaching the speech team, helping with KYA, and directing the spring play.  All are welcome to participate!!

When I'm not teaching, my favorite activity is walking my dogs...we have two labs, and my daughters each have a dog...two mutts. Our backyard sometimes looks like the "bark park"!

I look forward to another great year!
